Come to My Kaffeeklatsch!

On Sunday at 1:00 p.m. New Zealand time (Sat. 6:00 p.m. PDT), attendees of the World Science Fiction Convention are invited to come and talk shop with me at my scheduled Kaffeeklatsch. Here’s some of the ground we might cover, depending on the interests of whoever’s there:

Editing

  • I ran an editing firm for more than a decade, working with individuals, agencies, small publishers, and Big 5 publishers
  • I was the nonfiction editor for the literary journal Drunken Boat for several years, making all final curation decisions, nominating for prizes, and soliciting work
  • I founded the Editorial Freelancers Association’s Arizona chapter, served on the national board of directors, and wrote the EFA booklet Building Successful Freelancer-Client Relationships

Writing spec fic and poetry for kids

  • I’ve written and published more than a dozen books for kids K-6 in the education market. (Here is a bibliography of these works.)
  • I interned at a children’s book literary agency

Blogging

  • I have a column at Amazing Stories called Modern Myth and Meaning, a blog series on the contributions of literature and pop culture to contemporary mythology
  • For two years, my day job has entailed blogging for Microsoft’s UX Research division

Yoga

  • I’m a teacher of Kundalini Yoga
  • I’ve practiced many different forms of yoga over the last two decades

Navigating the literary scene

Spec fic workshops/literary workshops

  • I attended the Viable Paradise and Odyssey workshops
  • I hold an MFA from the University of Alaska Anchorage (a three-year residency program at the time)
